Kari is a seven year old enigma. For her father, Steven Erickson, she is the sun, the moon, and the stars. But for everyone else, she's just this side of creepy. Recently she was pulled from another school and placed into a private one because of her habits, which include: telling people they are dying, that they are expecting, and that they are about to experience something…awakening.
Character Information
Name: Kari Erickson
Occupation: Kid
Deity: Verdandi
Pantheon: Norse
Journal: fated_kari
PB: Elle Fanning
History:
Kari’s life was pretty normal for the first five years of her life. Her parents worked for the American Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. So most of her younger years was spent over seas. However, when she was five that was a car bombing that killed her mother. Staying with a Nanny while her Daddy went to the hospital, Kari waited patiently and calmly by the window. When he finally came home, she simply turned to her and said, “Mommy went to Heaven, didn’t she?” Before quietly looking back out the window and watching the sunset.
Since then Kari has been to several psychologist who believe that she suffers a detachment issue, as she has yet to really morn the death of her mother. Also, after her mother’s death, Kari began to ‘see’ things, such as people that were ‘fated’ to die soon, or had suffered emotional/physical injuries. This uncanny ability has caused many people to become nervous around her, and she’s been labeled ‘creepy’ at school.
Lately, though, her Dad has been seeing that she gets out more, and trying hard to explain that she really shouldn’t try to freak all the other kids out by telling them things like- the dead baby across the street is smiling. He says it isn’t good for forming solid friendships.
Personality:
Kari likes to plays board games (Shoots and Ladders and Candyland) and cards with her dad, particularly Go Fish. When she’s not playing games, or doing her school work, she watches a ton of Disney movies, dancing and singing along to Aladdin and Lion King. She likes to sing and dance along to the radio, and laughs and giggles a lot.
But as happy as she is, Kari has very serious moments when she’s not very happy at all. Particularly those moments occur when she’s seen something in someone that is sad or tragic, like deaths or injuries.
She is seen as being a bit creepy though, because of these ’visions’ she sees. She is very detached about it, having no real emotion concerning the loss of life, or the gain of life. In the end, she seems resigned to it. After all- Fate is Fate.
Strengths: Kari can see, in a vague sense, someone’s Fate. Births and Deaths are easier for her to see, but sometimes life-changing injuries are easy to see too. She’s smart for being seven, well learned with a good vocabulary. She and her dad are close, having bonded since her mom dead.
Weaknesses: Like any seven year old, Kari’s logic is not as well developed as an Adults. For her time is somewhat relative, and somewhat unimportant. Also, obviously being Seven is a bit of a weakness, seeing as she needs an adult to take care of her. And while she doesn’t become anxious when she wanders off from her father, the idea of someone taking her away from her daddy, or her daddy being gone for long periods of times can cause her to panic. And she doesn’t much like the idea of her daddy dating new ladies, either.
Knows:
Related to:
Kari's father, and only parent. They do everything together, a two man team. And while Kari sometimes wonders off from Steven, she refuses to let anyone come between them. This makes dating a bit tricky for her father.
Has Met:
A woman in the bookstore that Kari spoke to. Another goddess.
General Deity History:
In Norse mythology, Verdandi (or, Verðandi), also known as "Verthandi", is one of the three norns, along with Urd and Skuld. Her name literally is the present tense of be or "to be" and is commonly translated as "in the making" or "that which is happening/becoming", related to the Dutch word worden and the German word werden, both meaning "to become". She is the present moment. As one of the Norns she is a guardian of the World tree, watering it from the sacred well and keeping the deer of the four directions from chewing the branches, as well as a component of man's destiny.
There is some argument over where Verdandi is the youngest or second youngest of the fates. In either case she is typically pictured as beautiful and full of life. She is sometimes seen as a bit matronly.
